4 sign ideas for small stores

Share |
Small store owners are not willing to spend to large amounts of cash on expensive digital signs and store displays. Their budget constraints don’t allow them much room to take up professional help. But even with a small budget you can put up quality display signs that get the message across and also look great.

In this age of computers and cost-friendly printing technology, it is inexcusable to put in cheap and amateur looking signs. They completely destroy your image and the customer gets a bad impression about your store. Of course if you are going for the homely appeal, by all means go for it. Otherwise check out these great ideas that will transform the way you put up signs for your store.

A good quality sign is the most effective way to get the attention of the customer. Research shows that most shoppers spend only 3 seconds to glance at a window display before moving on. So it is during these precious moments that signs help to quickly direct the attention to your store

1. Good quality signs

Professional sign suppliers and designers cost big money and you don’t want that at the start up of a small store. It may topple your budget. Even though you may need top quality Digital display Systems and LED display signs for outdoors. It is not necessary to spend too much on short term signs and directional signs. Temporary signs should cost less.

Today using a computer and a printer to make a good presentable sign is not too much to ask. The only expense here is the cost of the paper to print. To print out a copy and mount it seems like an obvious thing but there are still stores that put handwritten signs and slate boards that seem awkward and sloppy.
2. Colour is vital

When printing out your own sign it is easy to get carried away and put in all your favourite colours. This is not a good idea. Always stick to a two or three colour scheme. Black text on white background is the basic and simple way to go about it. If you want to be trendier with bright colours, then it has to be done keeping in mind the legibility of the text.

Yellow and green is a bright and cheery combination but can you read the text from far? No. Same is the case with orange, pink and red combinations. Always remember that the message is the king and it should be clear from every corner of the store. Outlining the text or making it bold with a lighter background gets attention quickly and increases visibility.

3. Legibility and simplicity of message

With the intention of making the sign more attractive, some stores tend to make signs with too much graphics, drawings, squiggles and text. This may confuse and distract the shopper. What we need is simple two or three word sign with minimum graphics. If the message consists of one word then even better! For example: Sale, Open etc. Remember the customer spends only seconds to read a sign, if it is too long he/she won’t bother.

First decide what you want to say and then try to make it as concise as possible. If the message has five words reduce it to two and so on. If you cannot make it brief then write explanatory information below. So the keyword here is legibility. Ease to read should be the most important thing to be taken into consideration while making signs.
4. Good location

Signs are very effective if placed in areas where customers spend a lot of time. For example the cash counter. Promotional signs, new arrival signs and special offer signs can be put up here and it is guaranteed that the shoppers will read it. It is a good idea to place signs where the customers will first look when they enter the store.

Place signs near to products which needs highlighting or ones that has special offers on them. Do not block the view of the products or the customer traffic in the store. Utilize window displays to place signs while double checking if it is clearly visible from outside. Same with signs placed indoors; double check if they are visible.

These tips will help you create good quality signs with minimum effort and money. Small stores without many resources in hand will find them handy. You don’t need spend too much on digital signs and display systems
